Johannesburg Water (JW) said the level of water in some reservoirs in Sandton is critically low, as demand continues to rise.
As a result, JW said on Saturday evening on a notice to residents, its teams are both monitoring the situation and also implementing necessary measures, such as throttling.
JW said the Illovo Tower is literally empty.
JW said it is working on boosting reservoir capacity, including diverting supply from other systems.
Other reservoirs of concern are those in Linbro Park and Marlboro.
JW said this system is expected to recover overnight.
