The South African Weather Service (SAWS) urges vessels operating or heading to the Mozambique Channel, to exercise caution, due to cyclone Gezani.

The system is expected to bring wave heights of up to 10m, between Friday evening and Saturday morning.

Meteorologists at the SAWS also said in a statement on Thursday, that Gezani is strengthening, and moving west and south west of the coast of Mozambique. 

Therefore, rainfall of about 80- 100 mm, could be expected in that country by late Friday afternoon, into Saturday (24 hours). 

Authorities in Madagascar confirmed Cyclone Gezani has killed about 36 people, while more than 370 people were injured, since the system landed on Tuesday afternoon. 

Close to 18,000 homes were destroyed.

The Weather Service (SAWS) said although Gezani is now in the Mozambique Channel, it poses no direct threat to South Africa.
