The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Services has urged residents to safeguard children at the start of the Spring season on Sunday.

This follows an incident of a drowning of a 13 year old in Power Park Soweto.

Xolile Khumalo, Spokesperson of the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Services (EMS), said the boy was playing with friends, when the incident occurred.

The City’s EMS Aquatic Search and Rescue Team, in collaboration with the South African Police Service Water Policing & Diving Services, recovered the body on Sunday afternoon.

“A case of suspected drowning was reported at a local Police Station yesterday.
SAPS conducted search and rescue operations until 21:00 PM” said Khumalo.

She also said residents must ensure children stay away from abondoned buildings that are submerged in water and refrain from swimming in dams and lakes unguarded.
