There are no injuries and fatalities reported in the Sibanye-Stillwater Kloof mine (Westonaria) accident on Thursday.
Gwede Mantashe, Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, said on Friday, “up to this morning, there were no reports of fatalities and injuries.”
About 289 miners are trapped underground Kloof mine, when Kloof 7 gold mine caved in.
This is the second time this year that the mine is on the news, earlier in January, more than 70 bodies were pulled out, suspected to be illegal miners.
James Wellsted of Sibanye-Stillwater, said “we are actively implementing our safety and shaft examination procedures. Once these are completed, we will begin hoisting employees to surface. All 260 employees have been accounted for, are safe and have been provided with food.”
Wellsted also said preliminary investigations revealed the Kloof 7 sub-shaft rock winder skip door opened at the loading point on level 39, impacting levels 40 and 41 below this point.
“The open door of the skip caused some damage at level 35, and the work to make this safe has been completed” he said.
