A cage organized by Mine Rescue experts and the Stilfontein community, has fetched 81 miners who are alive and 34 deceased thus far, from the Buffelsfontein Gold Mine.
Ministers of Police and Mineral Resources are onsite, as well as Emergency Services (EMS), SAPS, Home Affairs, Pathology, Mine Rescue Services, the Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA), SANCO, The Sheriff, Mahlasedi Foundation and Community Leaders.
Each trip takes between 35 – 40 minute to shaft 11 and back, in an operation which began on Monday, to fetch remaining miners underground Stilfontein.
MACUA’s Magnificent Mndebele said work began at 8am, and is expected to continue until 10pm.
Speaking to media in Stilfontein, Gwede Mantashe, the Minister of Mineral Resources said Government should intensify the fight against illegal mining, which cost the economy about R60 billion in 2024.
