6 people lost their lives in flooded Lamontville and Chatsworth, south of Durban, on Tuesday evening, the 25th February 2025.

EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Cyril Xaba led a delegation to visit affected families on Wednesday.

The deceased are two adults and three children – a 56-year-old female and a 60-year-old female, who were washed away, as well as three children, aged 5, 11 and 16 from Lamontville . The sixth victim is from Chatsworth.

About 280 families in Lamontville were relocated to temporary shelters.

The floods also damaged infrastructure and as a result, a large amount of debris is spilling into the sea, leading to temporary closure of some eThekwini beaches.

The South African Police Service, the City’s Emergency Services, Pathology, and Emergency Medical Services are currently on-site attending to the incidents.

Disaster Management, Emergency Rescue teams, and other Municipal departments are working together to assess the impact of the floods.
