Eskom committed to scaling up its renewable energy portfolio through a dedicated business.
It will accelerate project deployment, targeting 2 Gigawatts (GW) of construction-ready projects by 2026, and then up to 6GW by 2030.
The capacity is expected to go up to 32GW, by 2040, including Green Hydrogen.
Details were discussed further at a conference organised by Eskom’s Research, Testing and Development (RT&D) department, alongside the G20 Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG), this week.
National and international industry leaders, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders across the energy sector, met to discuss clean alternatives and commit to shaping a better pathway.
Dan Marokane, Eskom’s boss, said the power utility is well-positioned to support the country’s energy transition and economic growth agenda.
The Sere Wind Farm, in Vredendal, Western Cape, fully commissioned on 31 March 2015, is Eskom’s first large-scale renewable energy project. It contributes 100 Megawatts (MW) of clean electricity to South Africa’s national grid, supplying power to more than 60 000 homes.
