Tembisa residents confirmed a shutdown on Monday.
Residents took to social media confirming the protest is due to service cut offs.
Another said it is due to “an indigent policy that does not favour the people of Tembisa.”
The Tembisa Community Forum said all roads in the are would be blocked, on Monday, the 23rd February 2026.
The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in the Ekurhuleni Region said in a statement, taxi operations would continue, in spite of the shutdown.
“Taxi services will operate as normal, with caution, and will be guided by conditions on the ground. Commuters who require transport and can move safely will be transported.”
E-Hailing services announced to the contrary, Tembisa, is a “no-go area.”
Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, Mayor of Ekurhuleni, said he has instructed relevant departments to halt pre-termination letters, and the termination of services to indigent households.
“We will progressively begin with the restoration of electricity, undertake a review of the City’s indigent policy” he said.
