New research concluded in 2024, found 51 types of green-blue-grey infrastructure (GBGI), including plant-based, water-based, and built concrete installations – from street trees to vegetated balconies, provided the most effective cooling benefits.
It also managed stormwater, reduced flooding, and the sequestering CO₂.
Street trees stand out for their dual role in cooling and climate adaptation.
The study also acknowledged challenges, such as maintenance costs and potential land-use conflicts.
As cities face rising risks of extreme heatwaves, GBGI can help reduce risks for urban communities.
Researchers screened 27,486 papers and reviewed 202 based on 51 types of green-blue-grey infrastructure (GBGI).
