About 15,000 people are expected to attend the main May Day rally at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, from 08h00 to 18h00, on Friday.
As a result, the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, has urged motorists, public transport operators, and workers, to prioritise road safety.
Violet Mathye, MEC of Transport and Community Safety, said “the traffic management plan was activated by the Department for all identified routes leading to Polokwane. This is from the N1 South and R101: Waterberg District, R37: Sekhukhune District, R71 and R81: Mopani District, N1 North, R524, and R578: Vhembe District, D19, R521, and the R567: Capricorn District.”
She said hundreds of buses and minibus taxis are expected to ferry members from all five districts to the stadium.
She said there will be no tolerance for those breaking the law.
“Overloading will result in arrest, no drinking and driving. You are marching for workers’ rights. Don’t lose your life or take another’s because of alcohol. We have a zero-tolerance approach.”
She also said “May Day rally does not mean Mayday on the N1. Speed kills. Arrive late, but arrive alive.”
