A fire destroyed more than 100 informal homes, leaving nearly 200 people displaced, at the Quarry West Informal Settlement, located in M19 near Reservoir Hills, on Thursday.
The City of eThekwini said despite the scale of the disaster, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Although the cause of the fire is unknown, officials suspect it may be related to hot work activities at one of the structures.
Emergency Services teams estimate the fire might have begun around 09h50 on Thursday morning.
Humanitarian relief efforts are underway, with the Municipality’s Disaster Management teams on-site, to provide emergency shelter, aid, and support to affected families.
Assessments are also ongoing to ascertain the extent of the damage and the needs of displaced residents.
Displaced families and fire victims are temporarily housed in alternative shelters.
