The Eastern Cape Department of Education announced the closure of schools in high-risk areas, on Tuesday evening.
Fundile Gade, MEC of Education in the Eastern Cape, said this decision follows weather alerts of Level 6 and 8, at some areas of the province.
Gade also said he consulted with the Head of Department and also issued a formal circular to this effect.
He said schools would be closed on Wednesday and Thursday this week.
The Orange warning (Level 8) of severe rains issued for the Southern Cape, by the weather service (SAWS) also extends to parts of the Eastern Cape, including Kouga and the Koukamma district.
Thunderstorms are also expected over southern parts of the Eastern Cape (at Level 6), as well as Eastern parts of KwaZulu Natal.
Tokelo Chiloane, of the Weather Service, said there is a large possibility of snow this week, north of the Eastern Cape, over the north western parts of the Western Cape and the southern parts of the Northern Cape, from Wednesday evening.
