The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said it received reports of vandalised traffic lights at the intersection of Caledon and Constitution Roads in Kariega, as well as vandalised street light poles along Kamesh Road.

The Municipality’s Sithembiso Soyaya, said preliminary observations indicate that the infrastructure may have been deliberately cut and damaged using heavy equipment.

He said the Municipality condemns these acts of vandalism, and destruction of critical public infrastructure, especially during a period in which municipal teams are already under immense pressure responding to severe weather conditions, flooding and widespread service delivery disruptions across the Metro.

“These criminal acts not only undermine ongoing disaster response and recovery operations, but also place the lives and safety of residents, motorists and pedestrians at serious risk.”

Communities are encouraged to protect public infrastructure, by reporting emergencies, vandalism and suspicious activity.
