Structures are flooded in several parts of Cape Town, including Island Informal Settlement, Makhaza in Khayelitsha, Imizamo Yethu in Hout Bay and Nomzamo, Strand.
Strong winds blew off roofs in Westridge, Mitchells Plain and Hanover Park.
Sonica Lategan, Spokesperson of Disaster Risk Management of the City of Cape Town, said Nyanga hostels are also flooded.
“Several flooded roads and blocked drains were reported in areas across the city, including Bloekombos, Khayelitsha, Manenberg, Bonteheuwel, Mitchells Plain, Mowbray, Rondebosch, Silvertown, Crawford, Athlone, Nyanga, Phillipi, Wallacedene, Lansdowne, Ravensmead, Plumstead, Bonteheuwel and Dunoon. City services were activated to drain these flooded areas.”
Chapman’s Peak Drive is closed.
Moreover, there are flooded roads in the city, include Church Street, in Bellville.
Lategan said the City’s Roads and Infrastructure Management Teams restored a roadway which collapsed on Sunday morning, due to a suspected water burst.
A sinkhole that formed in Wielie Walie Street, Atlantis, was also attended to and fully restored.
Adverse weather resulted in electricity outages in Gugulethu, Parkwood, Hatton, Langa, Phillipi, Tafelsig, Weltevreden Valley, Hanover Park, Samora Machel, Pinati Estate, Gatesville, Heideveld, Brooklyn and Claremont.
The Recreation and Parks Department were activated to remove tree branches blocking the roadway and posing a safety risk in the Rosebank area.
Teams were also activated to remove fallen trees in Goodwood, Durbanville, the Deep South and Sir Lowry’s Pass.
Heavy vehicles are advised to avoid the M3 because strong gusts blew tree debris to the M3 roadway, affecting the Wynberg Hill vicinity.
This is despite pools of water on the M3 / Paradise Road traffic lights.
Sand is also sent to Strandfontein Road and Capricorn Circle.
Fallen trees were also reported on Kommetjie Road, just outside Masiphumelele, blocking the left lane towards Fish Hoek.
