The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) announced that it would approach the High Court to seek an extension of the deadline for fourteen Municipalities.
The fourteen outstanding municipal and private distributors’ tariff applications were not approved, for the 2026/27 financial year.
This comes from a Court decision back in February this year, to finalise the consideration and approval of the fourteen (14).
Of the 176 tariff applications received in March 2026, 162 were approved within the prescribed timeframe on 11 May 2026.
Fourteen (14) applications were not.
Of the unapproved, seven (7) had outstanding information, while the other seven (7), could not be considered before the deadline.
NERSA said it could not communicate this to the fourteen (14) applicants outside the judicially set timelines, fearing to breach a court order and therefore be in contempt.
Affected licensees must have their tariffs approved for implementation from 1 July 2026, but the Electricity Regulation Act, 2006, as amended, prohibits licensees from charging tariffs that have not been approved by the Energy Regulator.
