No arrests were made by police, following a bust of dubious trucks carrying smuggled copper, estimated at over R12 million,
Police confiscated 121 tonnes of copper slabs, which entered South Africa through the Beitbridge Border Post, ten days ago.
Although the bust occurred at City Deep in Johannesburg, police said a multi disciplinary team, informed by Zambian authorities, had been following the operation for some time.
Police said preliminary investigations revealed that three trucks displaying false Tanzanian registration plates were allegedly used in the commission of the crime.
One of the trucks was later recovered in Zambia, where investigators discovered that it was displaying registration numbers belonging to a South African logistics company.
Further investigations led the police to the Joburg trucks.
Several law enforcement agencies were part of the operation, including the South African Police Service (SAPS), Gauteng Crime Intelligence, Interpol, Border Police City Deep and private security partners.
