Two people contracted rabies at the Ethenjane area and died.
The City of eThekwini confirmed the two were exposed to the same dog on 4 July 2026.
Both individuals developed symptoms consistent with rabies, tested positive for the disease through laboratory tests, and sadly passed away in early August.
There is now another suspected case involving an elderly woman from Umnini.
As a result, the eThekwini Municipality’s Health Directorate, is urging residents to remain vigilant and take immediate precaution against the disease.
The Municipality said this is because about 19 people were killed by the disease between January 2021 and August 2026.
Some actions taken to tackle the situation, include the vaccination of 141 dogs and seven cats, treated 25 pets, distribution of more than 300 educational pamphlets and community engagement at Ethenjane, Emapayipini and Mgalaza.
Approximately 5 000 additional animal rabies vaccine doses were also secured to support the expanded response.
The City reminded residents to immediately wash any animal bite or scratch with soap and running water, seek urgent medical attention, report aggressive or abnormal animal behaviour, and ensure that all dogs and cats are vaccinated regularly against rabies.
