Various conservation organisations urged locals near the Virunga National Park and the Semuliki River in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), not to touch, skin, or consume any dead animals.
These include the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature (ICCN).
This follows the death of twenty eight (28) hippopotamuses, who died of an anthrax outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Carcasses were found bobbing at the Semuliki River, which is located on the western edge of Virunga National Park in the eastern North Kivu province.
Park officials could only confirm the cause of death on Monday, when laboratory test results showed the evidence of Bacillus anthracis (anthrax).
Anthrax can spread from infected animals to humans in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), but is not contagious from person to person.
