About 246 suspected cases of Ebola were confirmed by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this week.
The centre said 65 of these resulted in deaths in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health areas.
As a result, the CDC held an urgent meeting with affected countries on Friday, including the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Uganda and South Sudan.
Among matters discussed there, is the need to start enforcing border control surveillance, and a response to the outbreak.
Dr Jean Kaseya, Director General of Africa CDC, said “given the high population movement between affected areas and neighbouring countries, rapid regional coordination is essential. We are working with the DRC, Uganda, South Sudan and partners, to strengthen surveillance, preparedness and response, and to help contain the outbreak as quickly as possible.”
Communities in affected and at-risk areas, are urged to follow guidance from national health authorities, report symptoms promptly and avoid direct contact with suspected cases.
The Ebola Virus is a severe and often fatal illness, which spreads through direct contact with body fluids of infected persons, contaminated materials, or those who have died from the disease.
