The Africa’s Coastal Marine and Maritime Tourism Alliance (ACMMTA) Conference, held in Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape, has highlighted the importance of collaboration, innovation, and sustainability in driving Africa’s coastal and marine tourism sector.
The event was attended by Patricia de Lille -the Minister of Tourism, Makhotso “Maggie” Sotyu – the Deputy Minister and Samkelo Janda- the Executive Mayor of Mbhashe Local Municipality.
Mutseke Siira, CEO of Gorilland Travelcare Uganda, delivered a compelling presentation on Africa as a Global Sustainable Tourism Leader.
He said tourism models implemented, are not just theoretical they’re already in motion, with real potential to expand as governments open up regional air travel.
This increased accessibility is expected to drive tourism growth and unlock new opportunities across the continent.
Siira also said while tech can enhance the tourism experience, the essence lies in the people, the stories, and the landscape. “Sustainable tourism must go beyond environmental actions, to actually support communities, families, and future generations.”
He said a shift in mindset around community tourism, is necessary.
“Too often, it is viewed as secondary or dependent, and its advocates are treated as “outsiders” in the industry.”
Oupa Pilane, Chairperson of the South African Tourism Standards Authority (SATSA) and Board Member of South African Tourism, spoke about financing tourism growth for small business (SMEs).
Pilanesberg also said funders are more likely to support projects that are unique, visually appealing, and offer standout experiences, often referred to as “Instagrammable.”
Pilane showcased the Grasop lift project which has operated for 7 years and attracted 1.7 million visitors, 80% of whom are local. The project plans to add a 60-bed lodge, and a new project in the pipeline.
Other speakers were Dr. Rosemary Manyevere – Sustainable Practices for Coastal Tourism; Anelisa Vena – Building Resilient Coastal and Marine Tourism through Community Involvement; Glenton De Kock – Leveraging Events, Festivals, and Conferences to Enhance Tourism in Coastal Cities; Vannessa Davidson – Boating, Sailing, and Yachting in South Africa
