Another one of City Power’s substations was vandalised in Braamfontein, on Wednesday.
Smoke was seen bellowing out of the station.
This is the second incident at that station, in the last two weeks.
During one of the incidents, there was a gunfire exchange between suspects and City Power’s security team.
Isaac Mangena, Spokesperson of City Power, said the facility was isolated as a precautionary measure.
Emergency Management Services (EMS) attended the scene and confirmed there was no active fire and also declared the site safe for technical teams to begin work.
“An inspection of the substation and its underground tunnels uncovered extensive vandalism of electrical infrastructure and the theft of medium-voltage cables. Teams isolated the damaged equipment to prevent further damage and protect employees and members of the public” said Mangena.
City Power’s protection and technical teams, conducted the necessary checks and tests on the cables and feederboards before restoring supply to most affected customers in Braamfontein, Parktown, Parktown West, Wits University and surrounding areas.
Teams are now replacing stolen and damaged equipment, and supply will be restored once the outstanding work and necessary safety checks are complete.
Mangena said the rapid scale of vandalism has pushed the local power utility to rope in the army and the police to assist.
