Do you know a she-boffin worthy of an award?

Well, the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) in collaboration with the National Research Foundation (NRF) is calling for nomination of only 2 South African Women in Science Awards (SAWISA).

A statement from the Department said the awards recognizes excellence by women scientists and researchers.

Nominees must be South African citizens or permanent residents.

There are 3 major categories, including for women’s research, young women’s research and the DSI fellowship.

The DSI fellowship is open to 6 Masters students, and PhD students.

Previous winners in 2023 were Professor Janine Barbara Adams, a Deputy Director of the Institute for Coastal and Marine Research, at the Nelson Mandela University. She is the DSI/NRF Research Chair for Shallow Water Ecosystems, and her research focus is on the conservation and management of estuaries and the response of blue carbon ecosystems to climate change.

Professor Catherine Ward, Director of the Centre for Social Science Research (CSSR) and the Safety and Violence Initiative (SaVI), won the Award for the distinguished Woman Researcher, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Ward was recognized for building capacity in the scientific and research knowledge base.
