The Sedibeng Regional Sewer Scheme (SRSS) was the centre of discussions, during a visit by Parliamentarians.

The visit came about, as a result of reports of sewerage spill, reported by some Sebokeng residents.

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Cooperative Governance descended in EMfuleni and Midvaal on Friday, the 17th of April 2026, purposed “to provide oversight and assess progress to date on government’s intervention.”

Rand Water and the Department of Water and Sanitation hosted the committees.

Makenosi Maroo, Spokesperson of Rand Water, said the “SRSS is a complex infrastructure network made up of four wastewater treatment works, bulk pipelines and no less than 42 pump stations, mainly in Emfuleni and Midvaal Local Municipalities.”

The project was constructed to fix sewer problems in the Sedibeng Region.

She also said “to date, Rand Water, as the scheme’s implementing agent in part, has built and delivered to the Midvaal Local Municipality the Rothdene pump station with a capacity of 625 l/sec and the 4.7 km- long, 900mm-diameter rising main pipeline. Rand Water will complete the Meyerton Wastewater Treatment Works before the end of the year.”

Rand Water has also successfully completed the construction of a new 50-megaliter wastewater treatment plant, module 6, at the Sebokeng Wastewater Treatment Works.

The Plant operates at 150 mega-liters per day.
