Two people were rescued in a canal void in the City of Cape Town on Monday.

The City of Cape Town firefighters set up the rescue using rope systems and ladders.

The City’s rescue team then swam across the canal to rescue an adult man and woman.

They were later treated for hypothermia.

The City said its mobility team were busy with rescue in Dunoon, Phillipi and Khayelitsha, after concerns were raised by residents about being unattended amidst ongoing floods.

Pictures and videos of flooded homes were circulated on social media platforms.

Northern Cape

The Department of Roads and Public Works urged road users to not attempt to cross wet and muddy gravel roads.

The Department said “you may lose control, you may get stuck and you put your safety at risk.”

The warning follows after much rainfall in the Hantam Region (Namakwa District), where many gravel roads are wet, muddy, and extremely slippery.

Truck drivers were advised to continue straight onto the DR2978, when travelling on the Swartkop Road (DR2981) and not to turn off at the Hoezar Farm intersection.

The weather service (SAWS) also warned against severe thunderstorms (at yellow level 2), over the Northern Cape, Free State and North West.
