The body of a man believed to have been swept away by a heavy current, was recovered on Friday morning.

The Garden Route District said the man was with a woman, trying to cross the Klip River at Waboomskraal.

They swept by a heavy current.

Rescue teams are also looking for another man, at the Oudtshoorn Mountain Resort area, believed to have been washed away while attempting to cross a river.

The District said it remains concerned about people attempting to cross full water bodies.

The Gamkapoort Dam is around 170% full and is overflowing.

Similarly the Floriskraal, Stompdrift and Kammanassie dams are also overflowing. 

Emergency services and SAPS members are actively monitoring river crossings and implementing crowd-control measures to ensure that potentially compromised structures remain clear of people.

Currently, there are 65 displaced people at Toekomsrus, as a result of this week’s storm, 38 in De Rust, 29 in Ladismith, and eight families, housed at the Lyonville Community Hall in Uniondale.

Requests for humanitarian assistance were received from Zoar, where 14 people require support; Voorbaat, with 29 people affected; and the Vlakteplaas, Barandas and Snyberg areas, where approximately 110 people may require assistance.

21 schools remained closed on Friday, primarily because they are inaccessible due to poor road conditions.

Eastern Cape

Zolile Williams, the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), is visiting affected areas by floods in the Easter Cape.

A total of 2,664 residents were displaced following severe rains over the last two days.

About 2,600 are accommodated at temporary shelters, where food, blankets, baby necessities and other essential relief items are being provided through a coordinated humanitarian response.

Babalwa Lobishe, Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro said at a press conference, on Wednesday, there were  141 incidents recorded by the Joint Operations Centre, including 59 flooded homes, 25 power outages, 18 stormwater-related incidents, eight road closures, and other infrastructure-related damage.

Schools were closed on 3 and 4 June 2026 due to unsafe weather and road conditions.

About eight roads remain closed due to flooding.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warned disruptive snow at level 2, continues in the northern parts of the Eastern Cape on Friday.
