Technicians are encouraged to build own solar systems subsequent to an online article written by Stephen J. Bronner. The article suggests ordinary,  technically capable residents can build own solar panels.
Comments related to the article suggest some readers are already rolling up their sleeves to power up own areas.

Can you generate your own electricity in South Africa?
As an independent power producer, you are required to comply with Schedule 2 (GazetteNo 43151) of the Electricity Regulation Act, that stipulates the requirements for generator licensing and registration or, exemption from registration, for your generation facility.

Although building is not the same as installation, your system must be registered with the municipality or local authority. Sectional title owners must also receive pre-approval from the Municipality.

Although building own solar panels can be reasonable because material can be bought from hardware stores such as photovoltaic cells, tab wires and some glass, proper planning is essential prior to installation.

Critics of the system such as Canadian – based Kubi Energy, say solar energy is weather-dependent and storage is expensive. There are also a few risks that must be considered such as energy storage expenses and clarity about what insurance covers.
