The uMngeni uThukela Water Board has asked residents to avoid crossing the Hlimbithwa and Umdloti Rivers.
This is due to overflowing dams into these rivers.
The Hazelmere and Mvutshane Dams in the eThekwini Metro and the Ilembe District Municipality are overflowing.
The UMngeni-uThukela Water Board said the Hazelmere Dam is at 102% and is overflowing into the Umdloti River.
The Mvutshane Dam has reached 84% which exceeds the stipulated safe operating limits which requires it to be maintained at between 70% and 80% of its total capacity.
“We urge communities to safeguard any property, including livestock, located on riverbanks while the dam overflows and water releases are in progress.”
