Dr Dion George, the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, said this week, he welcomes the latest information published by Ember Electricity Data Explorer, showing a decline in the use of coal to produce electricity, to 74.31%, since January 2025.
George said this record low, which includes behind-the-meter estimates, is a positive development, and is encouraging.
The data by Ember Electricity contains monthly generation, emissions and demand information for 85 geographies, representing more than 90% of global power demand. Data is collected from multi-country datasets, including the International Energy Analysis (EIA), Eurostat, the Energy Institute, as well as national sources.
In January, solar power reached 11.28% and wind power contributed 4.94%, together accounting for 16.22% of South Africa’s electricity generation.
Dr George said these figures highlight the growing presence of proven renewable technologies in our energy system.
“In view of my decision to grant Eskom exemptions for their coal-fired stations, it is particularly important that we continue to see a decrease in emissions, for which Eskom will be held accountable,” said Dr George.
He added “as Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, I remain committed to supporting this transition, ensuring it is both environmentally responsible and socially equitable. My department will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy, reduce emissions, and secure a healthier planet for future generations.”
