The Coega Development Corporation (Coega) handed over the Cebe Junior Secondary School (JSS), located in the Mnquma Local Municipality, in the Butterworth Educational District, on Wednesday.

The school was built for R54.7 million, to include new classrooms, an administration block and assembly slab, a science lab, a media centre inclusive of a library and computer room, a multipurpose classroom, and a nutrition centre.

Infrastructure upgrades also included the demolition of inappropriate structures, the addition of new ablution facilities, a rainwater harvesting system, a parking area and perimeter fencing.

This is because Coega is an Implementing Agent (IA) for the Department of Education, in the Eastern Cape.

Fundile David Gade, the MEC of Education, said inclusive development and equitable opportunities for all communities, is important.

Coega said the project created 56 jobs during construction through the employment of 8 local contractors, with a total SMME procurement spend of 34.7%.

Principal Mkhuqwana, of the school, said “we are happy to have a state-of-the-art school that offers our learners a modern and conducive learning environment. Learners are responding positively to their new school facility. The community is also impressed with the overall standard of the school compared to what it was before.”
