Construction of the City of Cape Town’s solar PV in Atlantis, has begun.
Speaking on site, Geordin Hill-Lewis, Mayor of the City of Cape Town, said the project is ground-breaking, and will supply 7 Megawatts (MW) of energy to the City of Cape Town.
The design of a 5 MW of battery storage, is also part of the project.
“This is helping us to bring down the price of electricity over time in Cape Town, as we reduce our reliance on Eskom” said Hill-Lewis.
Xanthea Limberg, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for energy, said “this is the first municipal utility scale renewable energy farm, not only in Cape Town, but in South Africa.
She said the project will also assist with consumption of energy at Municipal buildings, and to ensure carbon emissions are reduced.
