The City of Joburg Emergency Services (EMS) are in the CBD, responding to an incident where five contract workers were stuck in a manhole.
Nana Radebe-Kgiba, Spokesperson of the City of Joburg EMS, said on Saturday afternoon, three of the five workers were transported to nearby medical facilities.
One person has died and crews are busy trying to extricate the remaining person.
City Power, said it is deeply saddened by the devastating incident.
Isaac Mangena, Spokesperson of City Power said on Saturday afternoon, this tragic incident occurred inside underground tunnels along Commissioner and Von Brandis Street in the CBD.
The Johannesburg Emergency Services is currently working on extracting the
remaining individual.
“It’s not clear at this stage what the cause of the incident was, but City Power along with all relevant authorities are on site conducting investigations into the circumstances that led to this fatal incident.
The five contracted technicians were responding to a case of cable theft that happened recently.”
He said technicians started with the work of replacing and repairing the cable that was cut and stolen.
Today was their second day on site.
“We would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. We also wish a speedy recovery to those contractors who were rescued and rushed to hospital” said Mangena.
