City Power has confirmed the passing of the second technician in the Johannesburg CBD incident.
In a statement, City Power said it is saddened to announce the unfortunate passing of the second contracted technicianwho was part of the five individuals who were trapped inside the underground tunnel in the CBD, onSaturday.
Isaac Mangena, Spokesperson of City Power, said “the tragic event occurred within our subterranean passages where electric cables run, along Commissioner and Von Brandis Street in the CBD.
The five contractors were responding to a case of cable theft that occurred recently. They began the work of replacing and repairing the cable that had been cut and stolen from Friday. Today marked their second day on site.”
The first fatality was announced on Saturday afternoon, three other technicians were rescued and rushed to the hospital.
The last individual who was left trapped inside the tunnel had sadly lost his life by the time he was extracted.
City Power is investigating the cause of the incident.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. We also wish a speedy recovery for the contractors who are receiving medical attention.”
