The South African Weather Service (SAWS) and LandWater, have predicted a cut-off low pressure system (COL), along the west coast of the country, which started on Thursday afternoon into Friday.
The COL brings along continued strong winds with gusts of up to 70 km/h, in the south-west, south and south-east coasts, as well as over the central interior of the Northern Cape.
Rainfall continues to sweep across most parts of the country, including Mpumalanga, Gauteng, the Cape (including the Northern, Eastern and Western).
A level 4 warning for thunderstorms was issued for the Northern Cape.
Although some residents of the Northern Cape took to social media, to share pictures of areas flooding, these conditions are expected to continue, leading to flooded roads, settlements and low-lying areas. This is expected in both rural and urban areas.
Johan Steyn, shared a video of the flooded national road (12) between Lydenburg and Victoria West.
Another resident of the Northern Cape, based in Williston, Hannes Esterhuyse, said the small town received an estimated 80mm of rain.
As of the 12th of December 2023, dam levels around the country, were over 85%.
Those in the Northern Cape, were above 80%, according to information on the Department of Water Affairs and Sanitation’s website.
