According to the Global Bank Disaster Risk Reduction and Reconstruction Fund, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 struck the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka on Saturday evening .
Tremors were felt over 100 km away, including in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The region, part of the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire,” is highly seismically active.
A tsunami threat was issued, of waves of up to 1 meter above tide level, in some Russian coastal areas.
Local emergency teams are inspecting buildings. The USGS reported a low likelihood of casualties.
