Panyaza Lesufi, the Premier of Gauteng and Kedibone Diale-Tlabela – the MEC for Roads and Transport Department, launched the 2025 Easter Road Safety Campaign, in Slovo Park, Johannesburg, on Monday.
Traffic law-enforcement operations are to monitor compliance and to create awareness of the dangers of drunken driving, speeding, driver fatigue, pedestrian visibility, vehicle roadworthiness and the use of seat belts, ahead of the Easter weekend.

The Cross-border Road Transport Agency in partnership with the Department of Transport also launched a Cross-Alive Road Safety Campaign.
The C-BRTA has called upon Law Enforcement Authorities and road safety champions to ensure maximum impact in the area.
The Coega Driver Training Programme will be in the spotlight with one of our driving simulators stationed at the activation site.
Still in Gqeberha, the Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, in partnership with the Transnet leadership team, unveiled the recently acquired Ship-to-Shore (STS) Crane for the PortElizabeth Container Terminal (PECT).
The Port Elizabeth Container Terminal has acquired a new ship-to-shore crane valued at R240 million to increase its agricultural and automotive container throughput and its capacity to handle larger vessels efficiently.
Speaking during the launch of the ship-to-shore crane on Monday, the 14 April 2025 at the Port Elizabeth Container Terminal, Transnet Chairperson, Dr Andile Sangqu said “the arrival of the Ship-to-Shore crane represents far more than just a logistical milestone; it symbolises Transnet’s unwavering commitment to efficiency and reliability. Investments in critical equipment are central to Transnet’s drive to overcome operational hurdles, improve efficiency and fulfil its crucial role in South Africa’s logistics ecosystem.”
City of eThekwini
The EThekwini Municipality unveiled its Easter and Winter campaign themed “Endless Fun Season”.
An estimated 1.3 million visitors are expected to visit the Banana City over the Easter holiday.
They will boost occupancy rates by an average of 63 percent, which is an increased rate from last year’s 50 percent.
The local economy is expected to increase by approximately R2.5 billion and a GDP contribution of around R6.1 billion, with 11 000 employment opportunities created over this period.
Vhembe District
Freda Nkondo, the Executive Mayorof the Vhembe District, launched the 2025 Easter Road Safety Campaign, on Tuesday, at Maila Village, at the Makhado Local Municipality.
Nkondo also joined traffic officers in doing regular inspections of driver’s licenses for validity and checking if vehicles are roadworthy.
About 12 drivers were arrested for non-compliance of Section 56, of driving without the necessary permits or valid licenses. Several fines were also issued for unauthorized vehicles.
Nkondo said “we urge pedestrians to wear bright or reflective clothing at night to stay visible to drivers.”
