Eskom said it has spotted weaknesses in its systems, causing a rise in the generation and distribution of fraudulent prepaid electricity tokens.
Monde Bala, Eskom’s Group Executive for Distribution, said “we uncovered weaknesses in physical and cybersecurity components on our OVS system.”
As a result, the power utility is investigating OVS system breaches, to strengthen its systems.
Bala said the first step would be to tackle internal controls to deal with electricity theft, and also reinforce physical infrastructure, to limit both physical and digital access.
In addition, Eskom continues to monitor capabilities to ensure transparency and timely reporting.
