The eThekwini Municipality has confirmed an explosion incident, at the corner of Dorothy Nyembe and Anton Lembede streets.
This follows a video gone viral on social media, claiming the explosion was gas related.
In a statement, Gugu Sisilana, the Spokesperson of eThekwini, said the incident was caused by electrical cable arcing and not gas.
“Arcing refers to an electrical discharge or spark that occurs when electricity jumps between damaged conductors. In this case, the spark and visible flare stemmed from minor cable damage, and not from ageing infrastructure” said Sisilana.
There were no casualties as a result of the incident and also no disruptions to electricity supply in the area.
“We strongly urge residents and stakeholders to rely on official communication channels for verified updates and to refrain from sharing unconfirmed reports that may cause unnecessary alarm” said Sisilana.
