Nelson Mandela Bay

More than 1,500 residents were evacuated from flood affected communities in the Nelson Mandela Metro, by 7pm on Wednesday evening.

These residents were moved to temporary shelters by the Municipality and disaster management partners -Gift of the Givers, SASSA, SAPS, EMS, provincial disaster management teams and community stakeholders.

Evacuation centres are the Missionvale Primary School, Kleinskool, Lilian Ngoyi Community Hall in KwaZakhele, Xaba Hall in Langa, Kabah Living Waters Church in Kariega, Airport Valley in Walmer, Walmer Town Hall and Qunu community shelter facilities. 

Floods led to several power outages, including at the Bethelsdorp Mini substation, where an 11kV circuit breaker tripped.

Affected areas are Sections of Missionvale, Salt Lake, Vista University and surrounding areas

There was also a fault identified on an 11kV cable between Kamesh and Kamesh Spar, affecting parts of Rosedale.

Plettenberg Bay

Bitou Municipality said its teams are part of an activated Joint Operations Committee (JOC) on the Garden Route District, including key stakeholders, such as the South African Police Service (SAPS), Eskom, Smhart Security, Plett Security, Western Cape Provincial Traffic Services, Native Roots, Dignity Fund, and Gift of the Givers.

A total of 153 incidents were reported on Wednesday alone in the Region.

Floods have also affected roads, leading to closures of Old Keurbooms Road (Old N2), Avontuur Road, Stofpad Wittedrift, R340 (just above Uplands), Keurbooms River Road and Keurbooms Lagoon Road.

The Municipality also said community halls were opened to accommodate residents who were severely affected by the floods.

Northern Cape

The John Taole Gaetsewe (JTG) Municipality announced the R380 Section 2 is currently closed due to flooding at two locations: The Km 37 (March/Penryn Area) and the Km 69 (Madibeng Area) – Bridge are submerged.

The Municipality said an alternative route via Van Zylsrus gravel road (Km 65 – Km 96) is accessible. 

The Department of Roads and Public Works began work to restore affected gravel roads by the weekend’s floods in the Namakwa District.

Work is underway to channel water away from the Brandvlei – Loeriesfontein Road (MR572) to improve road safety and accessibility.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution when travelling in the area, as conditions may still be challenging.

Tshwane

The Tshwane Metro Police (TMPD) cautioned motorists not to use flooded low-lying bridges in Centurion.

This includes the flooded one on Rabie Street at End Street. 

TMPD said its members are deployed to monitor all areas, known for potential floods.

Lawley

A video circulating on social media shows flooded roads in Lawley, Johannesburg, with local learners struggling through the water in uniform, to get home.
