About 21 people died and 61 injured, when a fireworks factory exploded, in Changsha, the capital of Hunan province.
The explosion was heard at around 4:43 p.m. on Monday.
The plant is owned by Huasheng fireworks manufacturing and display company.
The explosion caused damage at the plant, spewing black powder all over.
Production stopped temporarily at the factory, while investigations into the cause of the explosion continue.
Chen Bozhang, mayor of Changsha, comforted families of the deceased, by saying “we are deeply grieved and filled with remorse.”
He also asked members of the media and those attending a press conference, to observe a moment of silence for the victims.
