A body of a woman was found on Monday, bringing the number of those killed by floods, to four, in New Hanover, part of the uMshwathi Local Municipality, in KZN.
Rescue teams have intensified their search for two more people, believed to have also been swept away by floods- one female and one male.
Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, MEC of Cooperative Governance in KZN, said multi-agency teams, including the police, are utilising drone technology and working with partners such as the Alimdaad Foundation and Gift of the Givers to find the missing two.
uMshwathi Municipality confirmed three (3) people were initially declared missing on Sunday.
Several houses were washed away, and key access routes, sustained damage, including the bridge connecting Wartburg and New Hanover.
The Municipality has activated its disaster management response.
Speaking from the Injesuthi River Bridge, on Monday, Siboniso Duma, MEC of Transport in KZN, said arrangements were made to support displaced residents, who are temporarily housed at community halls and at a local school.
Duma also said it is estimated that around 100 or less victims, mostly from Lesotho, were affected.
“Sadly, the informal settlements that were washed away were built in flood plains. We continue to plead with communities not to build in flood plains” he said.
He also said he has briefed Thembi Simelane, the Minister of Human Settlements, to intervene.
