Eskom is demanding full payment owed by the City of Johannesburg and City Power, following a high court ruling in favour of the power utility yesterday, according to Spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena.
When the matter was heard at the High Court, on the 4th of June 2024, the amount owed to Eskom was R3.4 billion.
Now that the Court has ruled in favour of the Power Utility, Mokwena said “we hope they will respect the court decision and settle all.”
The high court ordered the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) and City Power (CP) to pay R1.073 billion including interest for the unpaid electricity account.
In a statement prior to High Court action, Eskom said the City has been defaulting on its electricity account since October 2023.
The City responded with a counter claim against Eskom of R3.4 billion, that it was over-billed.
The High Court has dismissed the counterclaim by the City with costs.
I response to this, City Power’s Isaac Mangena said “we have noted the judgement in the case between Eskom and City Power.
We obviously do not agree with it and we reserve the right to appeal.”
