Global energy company Eni (Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi) or National Hydrocarbons, has launched a program to protect forests in 4 of Mozambique’s Provinces.
Speaking about the project, Eni said in a statement yesterday, the project is the first ever, to receive a REDD+ license from the Mozambican authorities.
Biocarbon Partners (BCP) has partnered Eni, in this initiative, to launch the Great Limpopo project, which spans across 4 million hectares, in four provinces in Mozambique, namely Manica, Sofala, Inhambane, and Gaza.
The aim is to reduce forest loss through the active engagement of communities in forestry resources management, coupled with the promotion of climate smart agriculture initiatives and the creation of economic opportunities, involving over 320,000 people.
The project will also contribute to the restoration of biodiversity, by linking major National Parks in Mozambique and South Africa with the communal forest areas to establish natural corridors for wildlife; elephants, lions, cheetahs, and leopards.
Eni said it commits to secure viable, long-term financial flow channelled towards improving livelihoods in the communities by off-taking the carbon credits generated while continuously monitoring the quality and socio-environmental integrity of the Voluntary Carbon Market.
The project is a boost to Mozambique’s national strategy on forestry and will benefit Eni’s net-zero strategy.
Eni also said the project will help in achieving carbon-neutrality by 2050 through decarbonizing its activities, its value chain and its products with a mix of different levers and technologies, including Nature and Technology Based projects.
