Hurricane Melissa has strengthened overnight to a predicted Category 5.
Turks and Caicos Islands Weather Info said wind speed is estimated at about 260 kilometres per hour.
The storm is currently nearing Jamaica, and is expected to move westward overnight.
It is expected to arrive on the island around 5am on Wednesday morning, with the highest rainfall and wind speed, never experienced in that part of the world.
But the intense storm is expected to pass through quickly, to die down on Thursday.
Residents are reminded to follow the National Weather Service for official information.
