Johannesburg was awarded the Best African Smart City at the Africa Smart Cities Index Awards, coinciding with the Africa Smart Cities Investment Summit, held in the 22nd November 2024, in Nairobi, Kenya.

Joburg beat 36 countries to take the top spot, Nairobi came second and Kigali, third.

Judges decided on four pillars including smart governance and strategy, smart economy and innovation, smart mobility and access.

Dada Morero, Joburg’s Executive Mayor, said “we are honored to receive this prestigious award, and be recognized as a leader in the development of smart city initiative across Africa.”

Jean Philbert Nsengimana, Chairperson of the Summit, said “I warmly congratulate the leadership of the City of Johannesburg, for this outstanding achievement.
This award is a testament to the city’s dedication to innovation, sustainability and improving the quality of life for its citizens.”
