Mikey, the male baboon, was finally trapped and moved out of Northcliff, on Friday, 27th June 2025, around 11am.
This follows nearly three weeks of tracking him across Johannesburg’s suburbs. He was first spotted by at Florida Hill, by resident, Roshin Kamfer, then he moved into areas around the Northcliff Koppie.
Cora Bailey, Founder of the Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW), said last week, Mikey is a nervous animal, trying to get home.
“He is frightened and has no backing of a troop.”
Bailey said the animal has most likely come from around the Cradle of Humankind, West of Johannesburg.
She said vervet monkeys and baboons move from one troop to another, but as urbanisation increases and population pressures squeeze in, wildlife sightings will be regular.
Claw encouraged residents to report sightings of Mikey, while teams carefully tracked him, set a trap cage for him to settle down.
Chad Mileham, a Director at Disaster Relief Emergency Response Teams (CERT), said Mikey “was caught, uplifted and has left the area. Cora is busy doing a health check and everything else.”
