Management of the Kgoke Lesabe School in the North West, wrote an open letter to Viola Motsumi, MEC of the Education in the Province, begging for assistance, following heavy downpours over the weekend.
The school in Ditsobotla, Lichtenburg (Bisiesvlei), now has broken windows of classrooms and leaking roofs.
The management of the school said “most of our mobile classrooms are in a bad state, posing a serious threat to our learners.”
There are limited non-functional toilets as well, posing health risks to both learners and teachers.
“These conditions make it difficult for us to reach our full potential, especially with matriculants having to attend weekend classes and also having to plan incubation camps.”
Cape Town and the Winelands
Rains have flooded some roads and brought down trees, after three days, in parts of Cape Town.
Motorists are urged to proceed cautiously on Plattekloof rd onramp to N1 Outbound, due to mudslides.
Other flooded roads are Bertie Genade in Parow, parts of Bottelary Road and Durbanville.
Parts of the Winelands were also affected, such as High Street in Worcester.
Heavy downpours and sudden cloud bursts also led to localised flooding in parts of Stellenbosch.
Jeremy Fasser, Mayor of the town, said teams were on the ground on Sunday, assisting with sandbagging efforts and visiting affected families.
“While our teams conduct regular cleaning of stormwater systems – especially as part of our Winter Preparedness Programme – drainage systems are not designed to handle the extreme volume of water experienced in such a short period of time” said Fasser.
He also urged residents to remain cautious, and avoid flooded areas as well as report any emergencies to the Municipality.
The Weather Service (SAWS) has warned severe thunderstorms would continue over Limpopo, as well as damaging wind and waves, accompanying a storm surge, between Alexander Bay and Algoa Bay.
