UMngeni-uThukela Water Board announced more water supply interruptions on Thursday, this time, in Howick.

In a press statement, the Water Board said there was a major Eskom power outage in the Howick area, which hampered operations at the Midmar Water Works.

“Due to this power outage, uMngeni-uThukela is currently unable to supply bulk water to parts of the uMgungundlovu District Municipality, Msunduzi Local Municipality and the eThekwini Metro, which are all fed from the Midmar Water Works.”

The latest areas with no water or very little thereof, are those supplied by Umbumbulu and Umlaas Road Reservoirs.
They are Howick, Hilton, Vulindlela, Mpophomeni, Hilton, parts of Pietermaritzburg supplied from the H.D.Hill, Groenekloof, Sweetwaters, Blackridge and Worlds View Reservoirs, Mkhambathini, Eston, Mid-Ilovo and Richmond.

Last week, the Water Board met with the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, David Mahlobo, and eThekwini Mayor, Cyril Xaba, the City’s manager, Musa Mbhele and his executive management, to resolve the City’s ongoing water crisis.

The City’s water supply efforts were also strained by algae in the Nagle Dam.

As a result, 30 water tankers were organized to supply areas in the Durban Heights Treatment Works.

The City is also expected to procure an additional 100 water tankers by December this year.
This, as Council is expected to approve a R30 million budget for the pipeline replacement Programme.
