A total of 499 rhinos were poached in South Africa last year.
About 406 of 499, were killed on state properties and 93 on privately – owned parks, reserves and farms. This is an increase of 51 in comparison to 448 rhinos poached in 2022, the Minister of Environmental Affairs, Barbara Creecy, said at a media briefing in KwaZulu-Natal today.
Creecy also said the KZN province felt the pinch with the highest number of poached rhinos in the Hluhluwe and Mfolozi Park.
She said 307 of the total amount of 499 rhinos were poached in KZN.
“Rhino poaching cannot be solved with crime prevention alone, there has to be other interventions and one of them is working together with communities that are around Rhino habitats” she said.
She also said the Biodiversity management plans and strategy were developed to protect black and white rhino.
