Although the N1 south and the tunnel were opened on Wednesday, motorists are urged not to travel unnecessarily.
SANRAL has worked tirelessly through the night to reopen the N1 south from Worcester to Paarl, with traffic controls and a stop/go in operation at the Rawsonville weighbridge.
The Cape Winelands District Municipality said motorists travelling south along the N1 from Worcester to Paarl, must prepare for heavy delays, with a stop/go waiting time of at least 1.5 hours.
The N1 north from Paarl to Worcester remains closed, with no timeframe for reopening.
Mop-up operations are underway across Stellenbosch Municipality.
The assessment of damage is also underway, with Jeremy Fasser, the Mayor and Reginald Pheiffer, with the Director of Infrastructure and MMC, visiting affected areas in Franschhoek and Lanquedoc.
Klapmuts was significantly affected, and municipal teams are attending to damaged infrastructure, stormwater systems, road clearing, electricity-related matters and general clean-up efforts.
Similarly, the Tesselaarsdal/ Solitaire road was also opened.
But rescue efforts of at least 8 families trapped by the flooding of the Kleinberg River in Gouda is underway.
