City Power is concerned about the number of increasing violent crimes against its infrastructure.

This, as the local power utility, reports over 170 arrests in connection with cable theft and infrastructure sabotage, since January 2025.

Tshifularo Mashava, CEO of City Power, said “the fact that our officers are now being shot at by criminals, stealing infrastructure is deeply alarming. It marks a dangerous escalation in this war—one we will not tolerate. We will continue to stand our ground, protect our people and assets, and intensify our security response. The safety of our personnel is non-negotiable.”

She said the partnership with law enforcement  agencies (SAPS, JMPD, PRASA, Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, and private security firms), has resulted in a 28% decrease in incidents, down from 1,471 in the previous financial year, to a current 1,058.

Of these cases, some 33 individuals were prosecuted.

“The rise in arrests and convictions is a turning point in our fight against infrastructure crime. These outcomes send a strong and decisive message that tampering with the city’s power supply will come at a steep and irreversible cost. The days of impunity are over.”
